高粱屬

高粱属大约包含30种，属于禾本科中的，广泛分布在全球各地，原产于热带和亚热带地区。大部份的物種是澳洲的原生種，有些則擴展到非洲、亞洲、中美洲以及印度洋及太平洋的一些島上。

高粱属中的一個物种为粮食作物，其他大部分物种主要用于牧草。高粱属植物可栽培於溫帶氣候的地區，也可以在許多地方自然生長。

栽培和利用
高粱属中的一個種二色高粱（Sorghum bicolor）,是非洲的原生種，現在有許多馴化的品種。高粱是全世界重要的作物，用於食物（穀類及糖高粱）、饲料、牧草、酿酒及生物燃料等。許多品種的高粱是及耐熱的作物，在乾旱地區是窮人及鄉村居民的主食。二色高粱在热带草原是非常重要的组成部分，在非洲、中美和南亚也是最重要的粮食作物，在全世界的粮食生产中占第五位。

其中一种品种石茅(Sorghum halepense)被美国农业部认定为美国的入侵物种

有的品种秸杆外皮可以编制席子，有的品种糖高粱秸杆含糖，可以制作糖浆，印度实验将其糖分转化为酒精燃料，美国正在研究寻找能将其秸杆和叶子转化为酒精燃料的最佳品种。

有些高粱屬的植物在成長初期會含有高量的蜀黍氰苷、或是其他對食草動物有毒的硝酸鹽。在生長後期，若遇到乾旱或是酷熱，高粱也會含有大量的氰化物或有毒的硝酸鹽。

在中国，高粱是最好的酿造白酒的原料，所製成的酒稱為高粱酒或白乾。
