遗传性代谢缺陷（）在新陳代謝過程中，除了製造出營養外，如果身體未能將食物其他部份成功代謝成為可以從排泄器官（如消化系統，泌尿系統及排汗系統、呼吸系統等）排出之廢棄物，這些廢棄物將遺留在身體器官裡，最終會對身體產生不良後果，形成毒害。
