在政治传播中,“你们不是站在我们这一边,就是站在敌人那一边”及其变种术语被用来暗示不参与术语使用者所倡导的党派努力的后果是被视为敌人。一个当代例子是前美国总统乔治·沃克·布什在启动反恐战争时所发表的声明:“每个地区的每个国家现在都要作出抉择。你们不是站在我们这一边,就是站在恐怖主义分子那一边。”

这种表述通常是用于描述发言者信念的描述性陈述,陈述的是一种基本假设而非逻辑结论,并也可以解释为一种言語行為。相关表述有时也被解释为一种或假兩難推理这一非形式謬誤。

有些人认为这种表述是一种劝说他人在不允许中立立场的冲突中选择立场的方式。只有在没有中庸之道等其他选择时,这种表述才具有逻辑结论的有效性。
