北海狮

北海獅（）主要分布在北太平洋沿岸，是北海獅属的唯一种类，海狮科最大的一种。

成熟的北海狮比其他种的海狮颜色浅，一般是淡黄到淡棕色，偶尔有些红色。雌北海狮比雄的稍浅一点。刚出生的北海狮几乎是纯黑色，几个月之后才退色。一般出生时体重为23公斤左右，不论雌雄，前五年迅速成长。五岁后，雌性约2.5米长，300公斤，成长速度减慢很多，但雄性可能到五到八岁性发育完全之后才停止成长，到那时长到3.33m左右，而且胸，颈和上身宽大，重量达到600-1100公斤。雄性额头较宽高，嘴部较平，颈部周围有一圈较黑较松的毛，看起来有一点像一圈鬃毛。 它们的拉丁文名字事实上可翻译成“有鬃毛的高额者”。
