在英文文献中，关于母峰有多种定义法，其中包括包围母峰（island parent/encirclement parent）和突起母峰（prominence parent），具体参阅。
按照惯例，由人类活动导致的海拔变化不计入内。因此在计算时会忽略苏伊士运河、巴拿马运河和其他运河，人类削去山口导致鞍部自然海拔的变化也被忽略。 此外，山顶的顶部的塔楼和纪念碑也不计入。

列表收录全球地形突起度前125名的山峰，按照山峰数量排名前三的是，中国16座，印度尼西亚13座，美国12座。
125名以外的山峰
一些有知名度的山峰排在125名以外，它们在下表中列出。在表格中，突起母峰（prominence parent）用1 标记，包围母峰（island parent/encirclement parent）用2 标记。如果仅显示一个母峰，表明其皆符合两者的定义。
