现代意义当中的“大国”（英语：great power）这一术语，只在1815年的维也纳会议之后才开始被史料编纂和政治学所使用。在1814年，在提到《肖蒙条约》时，英国外交大臣卡斯尔雷勋爵在他的外交文件中首次用到了这个术语。因此，在中世纪相关的史料中使用这一术语，对于每位作者来说都显得怪异。在前现代时期（pre-modern period）的史料中，更典型的说法是：帝国。
将“大国”区别分类为：通过“强大势力”（great powers）、帝国或国家来操纵国际法律秩序的一个国家的精英组织，并且其军事与政治力量可以定义一个时代。.
