拜占庭皇帝的服飾在帝國千年的歷史中發生很大變化。“将几何形状的布裹在身上”这一古典传统仍存续了相当长时间。拜占庭人偏好色彩和圖案，刺绣技术发达，他们製作並出口圖案多樣的服飾，尤以拜占庭絲綢著稱。帝國宮廷中層和上層對時尚十分熱衷。达尔马提亚长袍是这一时期的典型装束。但對貧民來說，服飾非常昂貴。他們很可能長期穿著同一件破舊的衣服。
