印度尼西亚与美国于1949年建交，两国关系总体上是牢固而密切的。两国都是共和国，每个国家都相互承认对方的战略重要性。
印度尼西亚民众普遍对美国持积极态度，2002年61%的印尼民众对美国持乐观态度，2011年略降至54%，2014年升至59%，2015年进一步上升至62%（相比之下，持不利观点的只有26%）特朗普执政期间，印尼人对美国的看法显著下降，2018年，43%的印尼人对美国持正面看法（比巴拉克·奥巴马任期结束时下降了近20个百分点），相比之下，42%的印尼人对美国持负面看法。
根据2012年《美国全球领导力报告》，23%的印尼人赞成美国的领导力，31%的人不赞成，46%的人不确定。根据2014年BBC世界服务调查，36%的印尼人对美国的影响力持正面看法，47%的人持负面看法。
