君士坦提烏斯二世

君士坦提乌斯二世（；；317年8月7日-361年11月3日）是一位罗马帝国皇帝，於337年–361年在位，也是君士坦丁大帝的兒子。他一上位就殺了自己家族所有男性親屬，在位期间薩珊波斯帝國和日耳曼人在帝国的边界发起不断的入侵战争，而帝国内部則经历了多次内战、宫廷阴谋和篡位。

異教
350年代的法律規定，參與或舉行異教祭祀以及偶像崇拜者將被處以死刑。異教神廟被關閉此外，普通基督徒破壞、掠奪和褻瀆許多古代異教神廟、陵墓和紀念碑的事件也屢見不鮮。當時異教在民眾中仍很流行，許多管區總督和地方官員對皇帝的政策持消極抵制態度。

儘管如此，君士坦提烏斯從未試圖解散羅馬的各個祭司學院或維斯塔貞女。他從未對各種異教學校採取任何行動。有時，他甚至還努力保護異教。事實上，他甚至下令為阿非利加選舉一位祭司。此外，他仍然擔任最高祭司，並在死後被元老院神化。他對異教的相對溫和態度體現在，在他去世二十多年後，格拉提安統治時期，才有一位異教元老對他對待異教的方式提出抗議。

基督教

猶太教

355年8月11日，高盧的軍事統帥西爾瓦努斯發動叛亂，西爾瓦努斯曾在穆爾薩戰役後向君士坦提烏斯投降。君士坦提烏斯於353年任命他為軍事統帥，目的是遏制日耳曼人的邊境威脅。西爾瓦努斯透過賄賂日耳曼部落，利用其籌集的資金實現了這一目標。君士坦提烏斯宮廷成員策劃了一場陰謀，導致皇帝召回了西爾瓦努斯。西爾瓦努斯叛亂後，君士坦提烏斯致信召他回米蘭，但信中隻字未提叛亂一事。原本要接替西爾瓦努斯的烏爾西西努斯賄賂了一些士兵，西爾瓦努斯被殺。君士坦提烏斯意識到帝國仍面臨許多威脅，他不可能獨自面對所有問題。因此在355年11月6日，他將自己最後一位在世的男性親屬尤利安擢升為凱撒。幾天後，尤利安迎娶了君士坦提烏斯最後一位在世的妹妹海倫娜。不久之後，君士坦提烏斯便將尤利安派往高盧统治帝國西部。

與此同時，副皇帝尤利安在357年斯特拉斯堡戰役取得了一場輝煌的勝利，擊敗了再次入侵高盧管區的阿勒曼尼人，贏得了高盧管區羅馬軍團的支持。當君士坦提烏斯請求尤利安的軍隊增援東部戰役時，高盧軍團擁立尤利安為奥古斯都。

由於波斯帝國的威脅迫在眉睫，君士坦提烏斯除了發出書信試圖說服尤利安放棄奧古斯都的頭銜，維持凱撒的頭銜外，無法直接回應其堂弟的篡位。到了361年，君士坦提烏斯別無選擇，只能武力對抗尤利安，但薩珊波斯的威脅依然存在。君士坦提烏斯在361年初曾多次嘗試奪回底格里斯河要塞，但都以失敗告終。一段時間後，他退守安提阿重整旗鼓，準備與沙普爾二世決一死戰。然而，前一年的戰役給波斯造成了重大損失，因此他們當年沒有再發動新一輪的戰役。這段戰事的暫時休整期使君士坦提烏斯得以將全部精力投入討伐尤利安。

駕崩
君士坦提烏斯立即集結兵力西進。然而，當他抵達奇里乞亞摩普綏提亞時，已明顯病入膏肓，無法與尤利安決一死戰。史料記載，君士坦提烏斯意識到自己時日無多，便請安提阿的半阿里烏斯派主教尤佐伊烏斯為自己施洗，並宣布尤利安為他的合法繼承人。

361年11月3日，君士坦提烏斯於因熱病駕崩。
