2020年夏季奥林匹克运动会男子足球比赛原定于2020年7月23日至8月8日进行，但受2019冠状病毒病疫情影响，此赛事延期至2021年7月22日到8月7日进行。尽管赛事延期，官方还是继续“东京2020”的名义举办。此赛事将在日本的6个城市，包括主办地东京进行。此赛事的决赛将在位于横滨市的横滨国际综合竞技场举行。男子球队原本仅限于23岁以下的球员，最多允许三名超龄球员。后来由于2020年东京奥运延期至2021年举办，国际足联决定放宽男子球队参赛年龄限制至24岁以下，即球员出生日期要求仍维持1997年1月1日或之后。

2020年6月，国际足联批准该届奥运足球比赛引进视频助理裁判（VAR）技术。这是奥运足球历史上第一次引进视频助理裁判（VAR）技术。

受到2019冠状病毒病疫情影响，本届奥运会足球赛的大多数比赛将闭门比赛，不允许球迷入场观赛。这也是奥运会足球赛历年来观众人数最少的一次。

上届冠军巴西队连续第三次进入奥运男子决赛，结果该队在决赛中以2比1加时击败西班牙队，成为历史上第五支在奥运男足上成功卫冕的球队，西班牙队则时隔21年再获奥运银牌。墨西哥在铜牌赛上以3比1击败主办国日本，历史上第二次获得奥运男足奖牌。

晋级球队
除主办国日本外，还有15个男子U23代表队将从六个洲际奥运会资格赛获得资格。

抽签仪式
2020年夏季奥林匹克运动会男子足球赛的抽签分组仪式于2021年4月21日上午10时（UTC+2）在位于瑞士苏黎世的国际足联总部举行。该抽签仪式由国际足联首席女子足球官员和国际足联赛事总监Jaime Yarza主持。

这16支参赛球队被分为4组，每组4支球队。日本以东道主的身份自动被送入第一档次并成为A1队，而其余球队则根据最近五届奥运会（最近的比赛比重得更大）的结果而被排入各自的档次，并为联盟冠军奖励积分。每个组不会有超过一个来自同一个大洲的球队。
