1983年9月26日，蘇聯核子預警衛星先後偵測到五枚美國空軍LGM-30義勇兵洲際彈道飛彈從美國的基地發射。這些飛彈攻擊警告被一位蘇聯國土防空軍的軍官斯坦尼斯拉夫·彼得羅夫判斷為誤報。這個決定被視為阻止了基於美國及其北約盟國錯誤數據的報復性核攻擊，否则冷戰僵局可能立即升級到一場全面的核戰爭。事後經調查確認衛星警報系統發生了故障。
