在這之前直接觀察到的超大質量黑洞聯星最小的距離是2,400光年。除此之外，類星體OJ 287的超大質量黑洞聯星軌道距離只有12年，比此星系的黑洞聯星更加接近，但這只是推斷，仍需更多直接觀察才能證實。

在至少數百萬年之後，這一對黑洞最終將會碰撞、合併，釋放出強烈的重力波。
