許多國家政府制定語言政策來鼓勵或壓抑民眾對某一特定語言的使用。雖然國家經常透過語言政策的制定來推行官方語言，但亦有許多國家借助語言政策來保護地區性語言或瀕危語言。整體而言，少數語言的存在可能構成一個國家內部融合的潛在障礙，但多數國家也同時認識到保障民眾的語言權利將有助於提升公民對中央政府的信任。
國家政府往往會透過制定政策、立法，或法院裁定等手段來培養國民對特定語言的理解與掌握，或是維護個人或團體使用某種語言的權利。由於語言政策的制定通常與該國歷史因素有一定關聯，因此實務上語言政策的範圍往往會因國家而異。同樣的，國家間就特定語言政策的落實明晰度亦不盡相同。法國的《》與加拿大魁北克地區的《》即是語言政策落實明晰度高的範例。
概述
對許多科學家、藝術家、作家、政治人物、語言社群領袖與語言權利捍衛者而言，文化差異性與語言多樣性的保存已是當今世界上最重要的課題之一。在目前世界上約6,000種語言中，超過一半面臨著在21世紀內消失的危機。許多因素影響著人類語言的存續和使用，其中包括母语使用者人數、地理分歧程度與該語言的使用者在世界上的社會經濟影響力等。國家則可透過語言政策強化或消弭這些因素。
舉例而言，以色列語言學家諸葛漫這麼寫道：「母語的使用與語言權利應該被鼓勵。政府應該將本土語言與托雷斯海峽群島島上原住民的原始語言列為澳洲的官方語言。我們必須改變懷阿拉與其他地方的語言樣貌。英語與本土方言都應該有文字。我們應該認可包含語言、音樂與舞蹈在內的本土智慧財產。」
