韩国足协原本提出避开在传统的6月及7月主办赛事，因为此时恰逢韩国的雨季，并且各国家队有可能选择适龄球员去参加同期举行的洲際國家盃。
塞尔维亚作为2015年的冠军已无缘实现卫冕，因为他们未能进入歐洲區外圍賽的決賽圈。有及于此，他们亦成为连续第五个未能入围正赛的卫冕冠军。
主办权
除了主办U-20世界杯，国际足联同时还就2017年的U-17或沙滩足球世界杯（以及前一年的女子赛事）的主办权征询成员国足协，有意者的需要在2013年5月15日发出申请。共有12个国家在2013年5月的截止日期时提交了申报：

对于主办权的最终选择是在2013年12月5日，于巴西举行的大会上宣布，韩国被授予主办权。
入围球队
共有24支球队晋级赛事决赛圈。除了东道主韩国自动晋级外，其余23支球队将从六个独立举办的洲际赛事晋级。自2017年起，大洋洲足联将增加获得1个参赛名额（共2个），而欧洲足联的名额则由6个减为5个。

比赛场地
天安、大田、仁川、西归浦、全州及水原是从9个入围名单中选出的6座比赛城市，落选城市则分别为汉城、浦项及蔚山。。官方标志、口号（，唤醒狂热）以及赛事外观在2016年6月16日发布。官方吉祥物“”则于2016年8月25日首次亮相。在2017年3月15日的小组赛抽签会上，公布了由组委会宣传大使NCT DREAM演唱的主题曲《Trigger the Fever》
抽签
官方抽签于当地时间2017年3月15日15时在韩国水原艺术中心举行。两位曾经赢得U-20世界杯的阿根廷球员迪亞哥·馬拉度納;}-和帕布羅·艾馬爾; }-参加了抽签。而来自韩国流行偶像团体SHINee的成员珉豪也参加了抽签

比赛日程由FIFA于2015年11月23日公布。每组的首名、次名和 4 支成绩最好的第三名球队晋级十六強。
