新加坡是位于东南亚的一个城邦主权国家，并且是世界上唯一一个城邦岛国。由于缺乏自然资源，新加坡国内的电力供应的一次能源全部为进口。新加坡在电力行业市场化以前，发电厂全部为国有。上世纪九十年电力市场解除管制后，发电公司逐渐从国家电网公司中独立出来。传统上装机总容量大于2000MW的三大发电集团包括：圣诺哥能源（Senoko Energy），西拉雅能源（PowerSeraya）以及大士能源（Tuas Power）。截止2016年第一季度，由新加坡能源市场管理局（EMA）授权参与电力市场的发电机装机总容量为13405MW，比2015年增长3.0%。目前新加坡绝大部分（95%）电力来自于配备高效率燃气轮机联合循环发电机组的发电厂。
