紫茉莉科（学名：）包括33属约290种，大部分分布在热带和亚热带地区，美洲品种最多，少数也生活在温带地区，中国原生的有有2属，7种，但也有引进种。许多属的花粉颗粒非常大（大于100 微米）。
本科植物有草本、灌木和乔木，也有藤本植物。单互生或对生，全缘，无托叶；花辐射对称，两性或很少单性，常围以有颜色的苞片组成的总苞；花萼花冠状，花瓣缺；果实为瘦果，有棱或有翅。有多种本科植物品种是被各地引进的观赏花卉，如小葉九重葛 （Bougainvillea glabra）、紫茉莉（Mirabilis jalapa）等。
