現時粉啮虫亚目包括有超過30個科、5,800個。

原蝨毛目被合併進小嚙蟲下目，成為了蝨毛小目。這個分類單元的部分物種（例如：書蝨屬 Liposcelis 的物種）在形態學上跟跳蝨很相似，亦在鳥巢中很常見，所以今日跳蝨的祖先的寄生生活很可能起源於此：

化石紀錄
The oldest record of the suborder is suggested to be Paramesopsocus adibi, known from the 晚侏罗世 of 哈萨克斯坦。
