摩托車的安全問題主要在於在摩托車本身及其配件的設計等各方面，以及其操控技巧及訓練的各種問題。
與一般轎車比較，摩托車缺乏車廂的保護，安全性較低，因此常被戲稱為「肉包鐵」或「皮包鐵」。相對地，轎車則被稱為「鐵包肉」或「鐵包皮」。

根據美國的國家高速公路交通安全管理局（NHTSA）在2006年的統計數字，每10萬輛汽車裡，有13.10輛最終會涉及致命的碰撞；但對於摩托車，同等的統計數值卻是72.34輛。另一方面，若比較平均行車里數的致命意外比率，摩托車的數值也同樣比私家車遠遠為高，是私家車的35倍。
在中國，單單是廣東省，省內交通意外就有七成與摩托車相關。
