金·史丹利·羅賓遜生於美國伊利諾州沃基根，但成長於南加州。1974年他獲得聖地牙哥加利福尼亞大學文學士、1975年獲得波士頓大學英語碩士，再於1982年獲得聖地牙哥加利福尼亞大學英文博士。他的博士論文《菲利普·狄克的長篇小說》（The Novels of Philip K. Dick）出版於1984年。
個人生活
羅賓遜於1982年和環境化學家 Lisa Howland Nowell 結婚，育有2子。羅賓遜曾住在華盛頓特區、加州，並曾在1980年代在瑞士居住，現居美國加州戴維斯。
