愛德華·霍列特·卡爾

爱德华·霍列特·「泰德」·卡尔（Edward Hallett "Ted" Carr，一般简称为 E.H. Carr, ，），为英国历史学家、外交官、记者和国际关系学者。卡尔为国际关系中的古典现实主义理论的奠基者之一。他以其在历史编纂学中反对经验主义的立场以及《什么是历史？》和《苏联史》等著作闻名。

早年
1892年，卡尔出生于伦敦的一个中产阶级家庭，就读于伦敦诺斯伍德的。1911年，考入剑桥三一学院，并于1916年获得古典学一等学位。

外交官生涯
1916年毕业后，卡尔进入英国外交部，最初分管对德国的经济封锁，后来到北方部处理与俄罗斯相关的事务。1919年，卡尔参加巴黎和会，参与了与国际联盟有关的凡尔赛条约部分以及德国和波兰之间边界的制订。和会结束后至1921年，卡尔一直在英国驻巴黎大使馆工作。回国后，被派往英国驻拉脱维亚里加大使馆工作。在里加期间，卡尔对俄罗斯文学和文化越来越着迷，他学习俄语，阅读俄罗斯作家，并写了关于俄国文化的书以及陀思妥耶夫斯基、米哈伊尔·巴枯宁等人的传记。1927年，卡尔首次去莫斯科。他早期持反共的自由派观点，不过后来有所转向，部分接受了马克思主义。

国际关系学者
1936年，卡尔因与常务副国务卿在绥靖政策上的分歧而离开外交部，成为亚伯大学的伍德罗·威尔逊国际政治教授。

1939年，卡尔出版了《二十年危机》，该书将国际关系思想家分为「乌托邦主义者」和「现实主义者」，并认为两者的对立是一个辩证过程。他论证了现实主义缺乏道德维度——「成功的就是正确的」。该书成为国际关系古典现实主义的奠基性著作。

第二次世界大战期间
1939至1940年的假战期间，卡尔回到外交部宣传部工作，随后转任《泰晤士报》社论撰稿人，1941年任助理编辑，他一直秉持亲苏态度。1942年，他兼任皇家国际事务研究所英苏关系研究小组的主席。1943年，他反对波兰政府因卡廷大屠杀对苏联的指责。1944年，他主张英国承认希腊民族解放阵线为希腊的合法政府，同时反对伦敦的波兰流亡政府和波兰家乡军，主张承认受苏联资助的波兰民族解放委员会。乔治·奥威尔严厉批评卡尔的态度，认为「他的效忠对象从希特勒转向了斯大林」。

1961年，卡尔出版了《什么是历史？》，该书基于他1961年在剑桥大学的G. M. 特里维廉讲座。在书中，他将事实分为两类：「过去的琐碎事实」（历史学家认为不重要的信息）和「历史事实」（历史学家认为重要的信息）。他认为历史学家基于自身的偏见和议程来决定哪些事实成为「历史事实」，从而否定了经验主义史学中历史是客观事实积累的观点。

1982年11月3日，卡尔于伦敦去世。
