，属壯侗語系，是寮國的官方语言。其使用人口约520万，主要分佈於寮國，以及泰國東北部和北部的佬族居住地区，是佬族的通用语。

寮语與同語系的泰语一樣，属于声调语言。寮语口语在一定程度上可与同属西南部泰语系的泰语和伊善语互通。其文字寮文是在梵文和巴利文的基础上演变而来的。

寮语因宗教傳入，拥有许多来自巴利语和梵语的用词。现代寮语又受泰语影响，混入泰语用词。无法定的官方标准语，但在永珍20世纪后半起逐形渐成寮语的标准方言。
