沿革
於日治時期為「臺灣臺中地方法院檢察局」，設址於現今之臺中市西區自由路一段91號，管轄區域為臺中州，中華民國接管臺灣後更名為「臺灣臺中地方法院檢察處」。

1950年10月15日，大臺中縣劃分為臺中縣、臺中市、彰化縣及南投縣。

1968年8月31日，臺灣彰化地方法院檢察處成立，劃出彰化轄區。

1982年7月，增設「臺灣臺中地方法院檢察處南投檢察官辦公室」。

1989年12月24日，為配合《法院組織法》之修正，檢察處更名為「臺灣臺中地方法院檢察署」，機關首長首席檢察官改稱檢察長。

1994年7月1日，南投檢察官辦公室獨立為臺灣南投地方法院檢察署，台中地檢署管轄區剩臺中市、臺中縣；2010年12月25日臺中市縣合併後，統稱臺中市。

2018年2月8日，全國檢察署正式去掉「法院」二字，直接命名「地方檢察署」。
